Effects of ICT
Microprocessors in the home
There are many microprocessor controlled devices in the modern home e.g in our washing machines and microwave ovens
These have a range of effects on our lifestyles. The benefits are that they do much of the housework meaning we don't have to do these things ourselves and giving us more leisure time and time to spend with our families. However the use of microprocessor controlled devices may lead to us losing our household skills and become lazy.
Internet banking and shopping
Many people now do all of their banking and shopping online. The advantages of internet services include the fact that we spend less time and money travelling to the bank and we can do our banking. However the disadvantages of internet services include the fact that you need an internet connection and some customers prefer to talk to people face to face
Data logging
Data logging is the recording / gathering of data at regular interval. Data logging is commonly used in scientific experiments and weather stations.
Data logging is often used because:
· Computers do not need to take breaks
· Overall the use of computers is cheaper than a human being
· Measurements are more accurate
· Readings can be taken more frequently
· Readings can be taken in extreme environments i.e. where humans can’t go
Data logging in hospitals
Data logging is used to monitor patients in hospital. Sensors are attached to a patient which record the patients temperature, blood pressure and pulse
Data from sensors is processed by a computer which checks data is within acceptable levels and if it isn't, will sound an alarm.
Data logging is used instead of nurses to record these measurements because overall it is cheaper and more accurate and readings can be taking more regularly.
Health and Safety using ICT
Health risks: The use of computers can make you ill e.g.
Eyestrain: You can get eyestrain from looking at a screen for long periods of time. To prevent eyestrain you should take regular breaks and have a regular eye test
RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) To prevent this you should take regular breaks and use wrist and mouse supports
Back problems: To prevent this you should take regular breaks and sit in a straight backed chair
The use of computers may lead you to getting hurt (safety risks) and you should not use liquids near a computer and ensure there are no trailing cables.
