Advantages of using the internet for any research task include the fact that users are able to search quickly for a wide range of information. Information can be downloaded and edited.
Drawbacks of using the internet for any research task e.g homework include the fact that anyone can put information on the internet and it is not policed or filtered, meaning that not all information on the internet is accurate and some information may be biased.
To judge the reliability of a website you should:
· Compare the website with information from other reliable sites or reliable textbooks
· Check the date of the last update – if it is a long time ago, the site is likely to be unreliable
· Look at the final part of the URL, addresses with .org at the end are usually reliable
· Look at the amount of advertising – if the site has excessive (lots) of advertising, it is likely to be unreliable
· Check the authors credentials – if they are good, then the website is likely to be reliable
Email
Email is used to send messages and files from one person to another
Advantages of using email are that messages can be sent to multiple recipients (lots of people at the same time) and (Multimedia) attachments can be sent
Disadvantages of sending emails include the fact that viruses can be spread easily and the sender can't be sure the recipient has received the email.
Phishing: Phishers (criminals) send an email requesting a customers details that says a their bank needs information asking the customer for their details e.g. their card or account number so they can use these details to login to the bank website pretending to be the customer
Spam: Receiving unsolicited (unwanted) emails. Spam emails are sent out in bulk i.e. lots of messages at the same time.
Pharming: malicious code is downloaded on a computer which redirects users to fake sites which can then be used to capture their personal login details
Video conferencing
Video conferencing is a method of visual and audio communication between people in different places Images of the employees appear on the screen in real time and they can be heard by all the other employees in the conference. Employees can take part in the conference wherever they are. Hardware required included a webcam and microphone used to input the faces and voice of the employees and a router to connect the video conference hardware to the internet
Advantages of using video conferencing for a business include the fact that time and money is saved as employees do not have to travel long distances to a meeting which is also safer.
Disadvantages of using video conferencing for a business include the fact that equipment and a fast data connection required is expensive and that it is difficult to call international meetings are difficult due to time differences
Fax
Faxes are used to scan and send (legal) documents via telephone cables.
Advantages of using Fax are that they can't be hacked or effected by viruses
Disadvantages of using Fax include that they are not confidential and may not be readable when they arrive
Wiki
Wikis are websites viewed in a browser that allow users to work together (together) to create pages and add the content. Once the pages are created, groups of different users can change and delete content and pages.
Blog
A blog is an online diary that is public (meaning anyone can see it) A blog can only be edited by the author but visitors can add comments which authors can reply to
Social networks
Users create a profile which is often only seen by their friends. Social networking websites allow users to send messages to friends and share photographs with them. The drawbacks of social networking websites are that users by become victims of cyber bullying and they may become isolated or secluded from society.
