Storage Devices
Storage Devices (backing storage) are used to store data “permanently” on a computer system and include:
Magnetic (hard) disks: used to store the operating system and data
Optical disks (CD/DVD/Blu-ray): are used to backup and transfer data because they are cheap to buy
Pen drives: Used to transfer data between computers because they are portable and robust, data transfer is fast, but pen drives can be easy to lose
Magnetic tapes: Used for backups. A special drive (often found on servers) is needed to use the disks. Magnetic tapes are often used for backup because they are easy to store away from the server (off site backup)
Backups
A backup is another copy of your data (e.g held on a hard disc)
Backups should be made regularly and should be kept off site (to protect data if there is a fire)
